ES2007S Post #1: Effective Communication Skills

Developing effective communication skills are vital tp me for three reasons:
1. To secure jobs and internships.
2. To build strong relationships with friends, families, colleagues and superiors.
3. To discover more about myself.

To secure a job or internship, a clearly written curriculum vitae, along with appropriate and confident response at interviews are vital. To achieve these, I need to have effective communication skills. Whether at interviews or other situations, when we have a good impression of a person, we are likely to infer that the person has more positive attributes or even disregard negative information about that person.* To leave a good first impression through writing and face-to-face interactions, we need effective communication skills.

Friends, families and colleagues are the people most important to us. Effective communication skills enable me to better analyse their thoughts and actions, learn more about them and thus be able to act appropriately to strengthen our relationships. In doing so, I can foster closer relationships with them and encourage them to open up with me.

Using effective communication skills, I can know more about myself by how people interact with me. I can then take steps to improve myself. For example, when my project mates choose not to consult me on an important decision, it may mean that they think I am not capable of making a correct decision or it is simply due to a lack of time. Using effective communication skills will enable me to verify which scenario it actually is.

  1. Yes, we should be more effective communicators if we become more self-conscious about it. This new control ,in turn, should make us more confident which can only help the process too.

  2. Yes Jackson, i agree that an effective communication is vital to everyone in many areas as what you have stated here. It shows a person's attitude most of the time. But sometimes we might find it's not easy to judge a person's personalities or his/her opinion to us as what we see might not what they actually think in their heart. However, I think experience can tell us the truth at the end. Hehe... Thanks for your sharing:)

  3. Hi Jackson, I agree that communicating effectively will help strengthen our relationships with family, friends and colleagues. Because not only is it rude when one do not practice active listening or pay attention when others speak, it also shows that one is uninterested. After sometime, others may not want to share their problems with you or even speak to you, resulting problems in one's relationship with others.

  4. I'm so proud of you my blogging buddy! You have brought up a point which I think is oblivious to most of us. Effective communication actually provides a window of opportunity for us to discover more about ourselves. As you mentioned, we would then be able to rectify any faults within us. To reinforce your point, I personally believe that continuous self-improvement is a necessity in life and it can only be attained through effective communication with others.

  6. Hi Jackson, I'm impressed by the last point you brought out. Besides being self-conscious, we could understand others better as well through effective communication skills. For example, by recognizing their body language or tone, we may know that they are happy, exited, sad or just tire. In turn, we can decide how to react to the situation and this could enhance the relationship.
